ESPNU and Warrior Sports Equipment have teamed up to host the very first ESPNU Warrior Classic. The event will be held on Saturday, April 24 and feature some of the best colleges in D1 lacrosse. Matchups include Denver vs. Fairfield at 11 am and Georgetown vs. UMASS at 1:30 pm.

The games will take place at Rentschler Field in East Hartford, Connecticut. When trying to find the perfect venue, Clint Overby, Senior Director of events at ESPN said, “We wanted to do something close to our home (ESPN is based out of Connecticut) and we knew that there was a strong lacrosse fan base in the Northeast.”

Lacrosse is quickly spreading throughout the nation and the fans are growing at a rapid rate. “There was a demand for lacrosse, ESPNU did a great job recognizing that and serving the fans by working to match up the demand with the supply, commented Overby.” ESPNU has helped lacrosse grow by televising games and sponsoring lacrosse events nationwide.

What the fans don’t know is how much work goes into events such as The ESPNU Warrior Classic. An event like this takes about a year to prepare for. “We own and operate about 20 events each year in basketball, football, and lacrosse. We rent the facility, secure the teams for the event, and prepare the marketing and ticketing, all of that goes into it,” said Overby.

Now Caudill is giving back to the sport he loves as an assistant coach with the Polar Bears lacrosse program. Caudill’s introduction to lacrosse came during a trip to Chicago with a youth group from his church. “I met a kid from Connecticut,” Caudill remembers.  “He brought a couple of lacrosse sticks with him and I asked him all sorts of questions and played catch.  I was instantly obsessed with the game and from then on watched every game I could in person or on TV.”

The league’s seven head coaches cast the votes and were not permitted to vote for their own programs. Syracuse’s Stephen Keogh has been named the BIG EAST Preseason Attack Player of the Year, while Georgetown’s Barney Ehrmann is the BIG EAST Preseason Defensive Player of the Year.
